Review: Extracurricular

Language: Korean

Release year: 2020

Episodes: 10

Genre: Teen drama, Crime film

A financially struggling ideal high school student dreams to graduate and lead a normal job-holder’s life, until the society pushes him into criminal acts.

This is a show where the audience would root for the criminals and pray for the police’s downfall. Oh Ji-Soo’s slow progress towards devastation would make you question the entire system of this society.

Moderate cinematography of the series takes a slight turn when Ji-Soo watches nightmares. The amount of eccentricity of the nightmares seem as real as the dream-world.

As the setting is a high-school, most of the characters are played by newly-risen artists who succeeded in portraying the right emotions. The mains character is played by an artist who has played moderately significant roles in other hit series like Sky Castle and Itaewon Class.

The characters’ makeup and appearances are more like a movie than a drama; realistic and less perfectionist. The right amount of cool filters compliments the thrilling genres, as well as keeping the warm emotions of the series perfectly, along with the original soundtracks that successfully amplifies the emotions and the overall atmosphere.

This is the kind of series where the ending follows Tagore’s famous definition of short stories: abrupt, but far from leaving you unsatisfied. The last 20 minutes of the entire series has more plot twists than 2019’s Eid-al-Fitr eve; the amount of thrill is shocking enough to raise a few points to the rating.
