Review: Itaewon Class

Language: Korean

Release year: 2020

Episodes: 16

Genre: Drama, Business politics

Achieving a gigantic dream from scratch is insanely brave and ambitious on its own, let alone for an ‘ex-convict’. Endless obstacles keep crushing Park Saeroyi’s route of plans, but never his spirit.

Itaewon Class is a mixture of “Revenge is a dish best served cold” and “Kill them with your success”. Even though Saeroyi’s dream originated from deep-rooted hatred and vengeance, the change in his purpose shows a remarkable character development and true maturity of a young man.

Netflix’s webtoon-based original series doesn’t disappoint in terms of direction, screenplay, and visual aesthetics; especially the comic style arts during the intro definitely increase the viewers’ positive impression of the series.

Even though the camerawork is nothing too extravagant, it certainly is photogenic. The overall lighting, setting and the casts’ styling is just like a fashionable Instagram influencer’s feed during fall. The cast consists of the most renowned artists, as well as rising stars that put on noteworthy performances. The antagonistic characters are written and played so well that everything they do would add to the audiences’ annoyance towards them.

The business politics and the plot twists would give the audience a certain amount of fury at times. Not to mention the original soundtrack that compliments every scene’s mood and emotions; especially “Sweet Night”, BTS V’s solo song, raged over the charts and have recently broke Adele’s iTunes record.

The ending would leave the audience satisfied and slightly attached to the characters.
