Review: Stranger 1st Season

Language: Korean

Release year: 2017

Episodes: 16

Genres: Crime Fiction, Drama, Thriller

Being without the ability to feel any emotion; a child with a special condition grows up to be a prosecutor. Hwang Si-Mok, joins a police lieutenant, Han Yeo-Jin, to uncover the truth behind a serial murder. Eventually, the investigation leads to corruption of the higher-ups and complications start to rise as Hwang Si-Mok’s past comes into light.

Only the cast crew is enough to drive a Kdrama fan into starting this series. And needless to say they are the perfects for the roles. Especially Cho Seung Woo as a cold, emotionless, yet kind Hwang Si Mok, and Bae Doo Na, who played significant roles in hit Netflix series like Sense 8 and Kingdom, as a brave lieutenant, would make you admit that no one else would do it better. If a Korean remake of Sherlock ever happens on this planet, and Cho Seung Woo is not invited as a cast for the lead role, you would be disappointed after watching Hwang Si Mok.

The casts’ appearance is mainly formal, business styled, but even in such grim color scheme, Bae Doo Na casually shows of her divine fashion sense without disrupting the vibe of the series. TVN’s screenplay and cinematography kept the suspense intact while teasing and misleading the audience a bit.

Even though the original soundtracks aren’t insanely good to hype over at first, TVN surely have created excitement among the Kdrama fans by publishing a soothingly interesting video of the OST’s orchestra to welcome the second season. Needless to say they keep the drama’s atmosphere in check along with the proper mixture of warm and cool lighting. The audience should prepare for a massive sad-rush as the series proceeds to the ending that indicates a new beginning without leaving you dissatisfied.

A somewhat typical law and political themed drama with twists that would make you choose the next episode instead of sleep, and surely the news of a second season would hype you up.
