Review: Strangers from Hell

Language: Korean

Release year: 2019

Episodes: 10

Genre: Psychological Thriller, Crime

The name of the series sounds exaggerated, until you watch the drama. Yoon Jong-Woo, a young man searching for a job, moves into a cheap apartment in a completely new city far from home, and meets weirdly suspicious people along with extreme stress.

His surrounding is full of unappreciative and uncompassionate people who only add to his already existing stress from being financially deprived. Although this series shows how young people from middle class family struggles in life to the point of going insane, the primary genre is psychological thriller and crime instead of melodrama.

The cast couldn’t be more perfect and each of the artists suits well to their roles. Specially, every Goblin fan’s beloved Grim Reaper, Lee Dong Wook’s role in this series is completely opposite to his other ones, which created quite a stir among the shocked fans who hardly could hold back their curiosity before its release. Instead of shooing fans away, Lee Dong Wook’s iconic creepy smile only amplified the shocked praises towards him.

The casts’ appearances are absolutely on-point and suit their characters’ personality perfectly. The setting and lighting are pretty much like OCN’s other thriller series: icy and murky, just like a crime scene. Pretty moderate camerawork enhances a little through correct screenplay and eventually leads to a satisfyingly abrupt ending that makes the audience feel like their life had been a lie when all the mystery unwraps.

An intense series worth watching, especially to fawn over the sweet and lovely Grim Reaper.
